ULTRASOUND INSTRUCTIONS FOR
OBSTETRICAL PATIENTS

PREPARATION

IF YOU ARE...

Less than 11 weeks: No preparation necessary.
11 to 24 weeks: Begin drinking 16-32 ounces of water 1 hour prior to your ultrasound appointment. Finish drinking 30 minutes prior to your appointment. DO NOT VOID.
25 weeks or more: No preparation necessary. With some patients the sonographer may be able to tell the sex of your baby. Please consider whether you want to know the sex (if possible) and advise the sonographer when you come in for your appointment.

OB ULTRASOUND FREQUENCY

An ultrasound is done early in pregnancy (usually your first or second visit) in order to confirm your pregnancy dates, and to give you an estimated due date. A second ultrasound will be done when you are at 20 weeks gestation, this is called the morphology" scan. A detailed evaluation will be done at this time, checking your baby's growth and development.

Typically, only two ultrasounds are necessary in a normal pregnancy. However, you may have more ultrasounds scheduled at the discretion of your physician.

SCHEDULING TIPS

If you are pregnant with twins, please be sure that you tell the appointment scheduler that you need 2 appointments.

If you are scheduling appointments with the doctor and are having an ultrasound, you must schedule 2 appointments, 1 with the doctor or nurse practitioner and 1 for the ultrasound.

When you arrive to the office for your scheduled appointment(s), please notify the front desk if you are here for a pregnancy diabetes screening (Glucola/Koladex), Non-Stress Test, or ultrasound, in addition to your appointment with the doctor. Many times we can have you complete test(s) while you are waiting for the doctor, and save you time.

Due to the space constraints within the ultrasound exam room, we must limit the number of persons allowed to accompany you.  Only a maximum of four visitors, please, including children.

No children under 5 years old are allowed unless held by another adult.
